Nugget had her first birthday about last month. If I had my way and money grew on trees, her party would have been at a venue, with live entertainers, a caterer and would have been beyond over the top. Instead, I created a sweet, successful DIY Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star themed party. Thank you to friends and family that helped make this party one (get it?) to remember. Here are my tips on creating a budget friendly, successful kids birthday party.
I started my vision board on Pinterest in February. I wanted plenty of time to create play around with different themes and ideas without feeling rushed. I also wanted to start buying items one at a time so I would not break the bank come July. Planning early helped make the DIY’ing go much smoother and feel less rushed. See my vision board here.
I mom failed hard on this one. I found several beautiful invitations on Etsy that matched my theme perfectly. I had great plans to purchase the PDF, print the invites and then mail them out. Etsy PDF’s are great. They are inexpensive, beautifully done and easy to print and mail. For most people, that is. Fast forward to 3 weeks before the party. Uh, oh. Thank goodness for evites. I used GreenVelope and was able to upload my Etsy pdf and send out the invite to my guests. It was not perfect but it worked. There was a small fee involved if you are sending more than 10 invitations but I was strapped for time and this took care of everything including tracking RSVP’s.
All of Nuggets decorations were either DIY or bought on clearance and recreated to match our theme. There were a few items I bought on jane.com for a minimal cost. #hobbylobbyforthewin
My wonderful husband cooked all the food in a borrowed smoker. In Texas. On the hottest day of the month. He deserves a gold star. The food was delicious and WAY cheaper than catering. Everyone had nothing but great things to say. I’m pretty sure they were not lying!
My dear friend bakes cakes. I would not have asked anyone else. She did a fabulous job on Nugget’s smash cake and the big cake for the guests. They were a big hit.
That’s it! Plan early and start working on your DIY’s earlier than later so you are not running around stressed the day of the party and can’t enjoy it.
